UPDATE, Feb. 7
“Earthquakes in Illinois could be triggered by movement in either of two nearby fault systems. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is a 150-mile-long fault spanning five states: northeastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, western Kentucky, southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.
A second area, the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, is located in southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana.
Both zones have produced powerful quakes in a magnitude of 7.1 or higher, and both areas remain active.“
