Home Buy-Out Deadline Extended

The Advocate –  Deadline for sinkhole buyout talks extended to July 31

BAYOU CORNE — Nearly half of the eligible residents and families in an evacuation area affected by a sinkhole induced by a Texas Brine Co. salt dome failure last summer have agreed to company buyout offers, while the rest have more than a month to complete negotiations.

Texas Brine faced a 5:30 p.m. court-imposed deadline Monday to reach out-of-court settlements with residents who had not filed suit against the company, but U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey extended that deadline on Tuesday until July 31, Texas Brine spokesman Sonny Cranch said. . .  .

  1. Some folks seem happy about this; some are not. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I do know that it benefits TB the most. I feel for the poor folks who are so strained that they just want to get on with their lives. The very sad thing about this is that if our political representation would have stepped to the plate, they could have prevented this from being so drawn out. And, sad to discover that none of us have any real representation at all. We really don’t.

    • They have a lot still to pay and there’s been no payments by TB since a tiny amount in the beginning. And they are obliged to pay ALL costs to DOTD for bridge monitoring etc. Nothing announced on that so far.
The fines and payments are on ‘The Big Feud’ page.

  2. they have paid the people of bayou corner over 35,000 @ 850.00 a week since last august. Now that does not replace the property that was lost due to their negligence, however, it should be counted toward offers, as many of those residents have remained in their homes and collected this money. Others have lived with relatives, and collected this money, some bought mobile homes and campers with this money. Right now, because of the real estate market in this screwed up country and this screwed up state are so poor, my home is now worth LESS than what we owe for it. In real estate terms, this is called underwater. WE are underwater. A victim of this country, this state and all the young families 10 percent of this neighborhood, who saw fit just to walk out on their mortgages and put their homes into foreclosure and some, sheriff sale, which in turn makes the responsible people have to PAY to sell their home. I m a victim, but NO ONE pays me 850.00 a week, nor does anyone offer to buy out my home at an acceptable rate. There is no one to sue, but plenty to blame, yet no one cares about me, or my home plight. I say to the people of bayou corner, take your money offers and RUN WITH IT! Cause it could be worse. Also, push comes to shove, it is also highly possible that I could lose my home if the worst scenerio comes to pass..and still, no one would pay me anything.

    • To Karen Gentile
What you have writing show me, I should say a reminder to me how incredible how short life really is you can’t take it with you.
You can be dead or alive in this incredible universe.
You can be happy that you are alive or dead in hate.
We can lose everything in a life time some well remember the good time some well grow old any be bitter for the rest of their lives.
I for one do believe in a higher power and we are here to learn.
I for one do have a very low IQ I think the father more and more for things he has show me and taught me.

      • I don’t think you have a low IQ, Walter. You know more than anybody about the geology near the caverns.

    • I guess you need a disaster to sell your house!
Light a Bic lighter around your lawn and see if any methane is coming up!
What banks fear the most, I think, is a unified boycott of their mortgage payments or student loans.
