Natural gas rig explodes, burns in Gulf of Mexico

(CNN) A natural gas platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico late Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The rig, leased by Houston-based Walter Oil & Gas Corp., was burning about 60 miles southwest of Grand Isle, Louisiana, early Wednesday, according to Petty Officer Carlos Vega. A Coast Guard vessel witnessed the blast.

Forty-four workers were evacuated from the rig earlier Tuesday after a blowout occurred, officials said.

Natural gas was leaking, but no oil was being released, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said. . . .

– Oh, yeah? What about that half mile long sheen reported yesterday???

The New Orleans Times-Picayune has details about the work on the rig.

  1. Where is ship shoals in relation to this well? Why can they not measure psi in sinkhole. It would seem as if they could use a very very tiny hole and measure it in relation to the gas pressure and figure out what might be going on at the bottom of the sink hole. It just all seems so related

  2. Isn’t the gulf a giant methane bubble, with methane seeping from fissures on the floor of the gulf? If that is what I’ve read a few times, it would stand to reason that if you drill 22,000 ft. Under these circumstances, then something, somewhere is going to blow. Not to mention that they have been chemtrailing the area, hard for weeks now and have been harping over us during the night time hours for about four days now. A little concerned over this…

  3. Fire is good, the gas is being consumed. I’d be worried if it wasn’t because there would be one hell of an explosion when it found an ignition source.

    • But there’s also a lot of gas bubbling up around the rig – next to an ignition source. It’s probably burning too, but it’s a dangerous situation, especially if there’s much more gas on its way up.

      • Yes, thank goodness. I’m concerned about the Coast Guard and company employees tasked with trying to stop this thing. Are we ever going to learn – how many lessons does Mother Earth need to repeat before we get it? There’s a story in Mother Earth News that says the cost of going off-grid has halved during President Obama’s administration. It’s still costly (around $20,000), but moving in the right direction….

    • unexpected?? Aren’t they prospecting for that stuff???
I think methane is getting shoved up from BP site …

      • The “unexpected” got me too. What’s the difference between a “pocket” of methane and a “bubble” of methane?

  4. A bubble will burn for a short period of time, a pocket depending on how big it is and how much pressure it is under will determine how long it burns.

    • I got that. I am adding all the additional items on Herc to the original post. And there’s a quick link now on the sidebar to get to it….

    • oh, thanks for that!
