Fearing eruption, Iceland evacuates area near rumbling volcano

“It cannot be ruled out that the seismic activity in Bardarbunga could lead to a volcanic eruption.”
“. . . . Einar Einarsson, a meteorologist at Iceland’s Met Office, said earthquakes were happening practically every minute and seismic activity was constant.”

UPDATE, Aug. 23

BBC – Code Red

Since larger earthquakes from every which way seem to set Lake FUBAR off into heavy-duty-washer-cycle mode we are watching Iceland – FC

Oklahoma frack-quakes are getting really big, besides being constant. They may affect Lake FUBAR too. 4.2 quake yesterday.

Texas Brine has a newish fact sheet out.

CrosstexHarry  ..    Crosstex hasn’t said what they are up to since Aug. 9th (!!).

Since we last complained about no updates there still aren’t any =sigh=.

  1. Possible Crosstex reasons for no news:
1-no news is good news. So there is news!
2-it’s well known if you cannt say anything nice don’t say anything at all.
3-when PR finished censoring there wasn’t anything left to report.
4-if you say nothing you cannt be accused of lying.
5-and of course there is the 5th ammendment.
Feel free to choose as you see fit based on your proclivity.

  2. Just read this rather worrying update on Iceland:

“Earthquake activity did drop a little yesterday (19-August-2014). Today (20-August-2014) it increased again. What is also a interesting development is that earthquake activity has increased in Bárðarbunga volcano caldera. The caldera is filled with 700 meter thick ice so an eruption in it would be extremely bad. Largest earthquakes today (when this is written) have the magnitude of 3,0. Other earthquakes have been smaller. Over 500 earthquakes have been recorded since midnight”

  3. Here’s more Wednesday news.
I’ve been watching this front build for the past couple days on accuweather/video.

Potential for a Storm in Atlantic Basin
    August 20, 2014; 11:52 AM
While the Atlantic Basin has been quiet since June, there is potential for a storm next week. Bernie Rayno has the details.

Statement as of 2:00 PM EDT on August 20, 2014

For the North Atlantic…Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of mexico:
Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with an elongated area
of low pressure located several hundred miles east of the Windward
Islands has become a little better organized during the past few
hours. Additional slow development of this system is possible during
the next day or two, and a tropical depression could form as the
system moves west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph across the Lesser
Antilles and into the Caribbean Sea. After that time, land
interaction could limit development potential over the weekend.
Regardless of tropical cyclone formation, gusty winds and heavy
rainfall are possible across portions of the Lesser Antilles, Puerto
Rico, and the Virgin Islands on Thursday night and Friday. Interests
in those islands should closely monitor the progress of this system.
An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft is scheduled to
investigate this system tomorrow afternoon, if necessary.

  4. Mystery In The Ozone Layer: unknown source
What does this has to do with us radiation from the sun hitting the earth.
NASA video discusses new research that shows Earth’s atmosphere contains an unexpectedly large amount of an ozone-depleting compound from an unknown source decades after the compound was banned worldwide.

  5. Potential for a future caldera collapse event in Iceland by the sounds of it!

“There are now clues that Bárðarbunga volcano caldera is getting lower. While there are no signs of imminent collapse such event might happen since this process has started. This explains the earthquake the activity in the caldera, that has been taking place for the past 48 hours. What this means in terms of an eruption I do not know, what I do know is that this type of event if it happens are never small and the following eruption might be huge. This is also going to change the landscape in Vatnajökull glacier forever (that is common thing in Iceland during an eruption cycles).

There has also formed a 25 km long dyke trench in the crust that goes north-east at the moment. There are clues that it might be getting wider at this moment. It appears to have stopped going north-east for the time being.”

…or of course, nothing at all will happen.

However, he makes many claims without secondary sources so i downplay him a little bit.
Undersea, Gulf of Mexico volcano items on The Bugle and Yellowstone & west coast volcano items on the YS blog mainly.
But Iceland will affect both (opinion).

  6. Five hundred meters of glacier on top on Bárdarbunga volcano equates to a lot of water.

    Bárdarbunga volcano (Central Iceland) – activity news / 9 Feb 2011 – 23 Aug 2014
    Excerpt:
    23 August 2014
Seismic stations near the volcano show a marked increase in tremor since about an hour ago. This could indicate that an eruption has started or is about to start, but this needs to be confirmed. The first visual signs of an eruption (assuming it starts under the ice cap) should be meltwater floods.

    • Flyingcuttlefish, I just emailed two Google Earth images of Iceland. One image is a closeup of the glacier with volcano icon and symbol for M4.7 earthquake. It’s helpful to see area we’re talking about. I don’t know if you can read your emails yet.

    • already updated that …
it may go any time ….
[ I am adding the updates to the original post, not Wed. News post ]

    • if anything happens today post a comment (I will be away).
If there is a link leave off the HTTP part at the front. It will keep it out of the spam bin (I hope!).
