Dire Prediction for Gulf of Mexico ‘dead zone’

Gulf of Mexico’s oxygen devoid ‘dead zone’ could hit near-record 8,000 square miles this year, shocking report reveals

  • NOAA says the low-oxygen  area is likely to cover about 7,800 square miles
  • This is in large part due to high spring rainfall, carrying fertilizer downriver
  • Nutrients feed algae, which die and decompose on sea floor, using up oxygen
  • The record set in 2017 is 8,776 square miles (22,700 square kilometers)

I forgot all about this in all the talk about midwest floods … FC

  1. Worst of flooding is over for the central US, but still some hurdles to overcome into July

Dead Zone, the size of Massachusetts, predicted in Gulf of Mexico

It’s the farmer that are killing the fish there putting too much nitrate and phosphorus on their land to grow a crops

    • note to people who don’t pay attention to agriculture … but US farms long ago depleted all the good out of farm lands and are now 100% dependent on nitrogen injection or other chemical farming technique.

  2. In response to your soil depletion topic: Part is because the Mississippi isn’t allowed to flood anymore. But, I think it’s also (mostly?) because of the shift from crop rotation to monocrop. However, I don’t know if they are using soy now to rotate with the corn? One of my grandfathers grew corn and peanuts – I guess rotated. 5. On Walter saying being down on everyone: The whole point is a handful are jeopardizing the country. Yes, I’m down on a handful of people who know they are in a spillway since 1953 jeopardizing the agriculture, life and safety, not only of the over a million people between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, but if there’s a nuclear accident from it of the entire country and economy. If Waterford levee breaks it will impact neighboring chemical plants. Angola prison farm has a huge amount of farmland – 18,000 acres under water. How much private acreage under water? No one tells us. All that matters are a couple of guys – maybe a handful. Not sure how many times I have to say that. It also will rain rad on the rest of the world.

    • What if those people are thinking of Restoration the land that has been lost in the Mississippi Delta Basin
You would be asking how would you do that
The word is sediment from the Mississippi River going into the Mississippi Delta Basin

      Mississippi River Delta
Louisiana coastal plain, one of the largest areas of coastal wetlands in the United States.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_River_Delta

      • In Illinois where the MO River floods a lot and other flood areas they moved whole communities away (bought out the homes) and just use the land for crops with no houses. The state found it cheaper than after flood help each time.

      • Just think what you’re saying about water going down the Atchafalaya river by opening the Morganza Spillway
What if they did open the Morganza Spillway and they could not turn it off again and all the water from the Mississippi river goes down the Atchafalaya river the river changes course
From Baton Rouge to New Orleans and down they well be drinking salt water no more freshwater

      • I think if if got stuck they would add sand bags and those giant bags of rocks to seal it up when they were done.

  6. Think Big !
Amino acids come in two types, left-handed and right-handed (called chirality).
Almost all life on earth is based on left-handed amino acids.
Why is life left handed ?
Must the Molecules of Life Always be Left-Handed or Right-Handed?
    They are on Earth

    • PHYS.org is very close to plastic manufacturers and commercial media. They are big advocates of polluters like the nuke industry.

  7. Do you think part of the reason for the dolphin deaths is the same reason for all of Florida’s west coast red tide? As well as the freshwater intrusion? I watched 3 of those videos from “Mr. Klein”. They were very interesting, explaining in simple detail about the Old River Control Structure, Morganza spillway, and the industries, commerce and folks and marine life being impacted up and down the Mississippi River, particularly in LA. Thanks for posting.
