Attorney, Stuart Smith – Progress for the people of Louisiana

One of the major themes I’ve been writing about frequently in the last year is the rising environmental movement in Louisiana. To be clear, my home state already boasted some fierce fighters for environmental justice, like Marylee Orr and her Louisiana Environmental Action Network, or the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, doing battle with dirty chemical plants. But the shock of recent events such as the BP oil spill and the Bayou Corne sinkhole has caused a lot more people to wake up, and they’ve rallied behind movements like Gen. Russel Honore’s “Green Army.” . . .

Texas Brine put out  a fact sheet about how they plug wells.

Attorney Stuart Smith opines on Texas Brine’s water discharge permit deal – A terrible quick fix for the Louisiana sinkhole

At 1:34 a.m. something shook up Lake FUBAR … but not all of the helicorders went off. There was a 6.7M quake in Guam at 1:14 a.m. CST.

Temorary, Arkansas showed it too.  LA10-01 and 02 are broken.

LA10-03, LA12 etc. showed it clearly but, oddly, LA17-01 (lower borehole) did not and neither did LA21. LA21 shows a big ding at 3 a.m..

Seismic activity returned around 6:45 a.m.. Some helicorders show ‘fuzz’ and no big dings and others look like this:

Agency can look at rig owner’s role in oil spill

NEW ORLEANS — A federal appeals court in New Orleans has upheld a federal safety board’s right to investigate the role of Transocean Deepwater Drilling Corp. in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.
Transocean owned the Deepwater Horizon rig that was drilling for BP PLC at its Macondo well, about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast when an explosion killed 11 workers and led to the nation’s worst offshore oil spill.

This looks new (!!) – Sinkhole near Bayou Corne sucks down another patch of earth

BAYOU CORNE, Louisiana — The sinkhole near Bayou Corne sucked down another patch of earth as Texas Brine Co. released pressure again from its failed salt dome cavern near the 29-acre swampland sinkhole in Assumption Parish.

Officials say the edge collapse, or slough-in, came five days after six trees in the same area were pulled down into the hole’s watery depths. Texas Brine was releasing pressure from the cavern around the same time. . . .

. . .  it is after the trees falling in and is the same event that was on the Mar. 31 video:

[snip] ” . . .  Scientists have Daffy_Duckdescribed the connection between the sinkhole and the broken cavern as a U-shape. Rock moves down through the  shattered  earth under the sinkhole and into the 5,000-foot-deep breach near the cavern’s bottom inside the cavity and then up the cavern toward its roof. . . .”

Reader, Mark, asks what if Lake FUBAR is creating a big overhang around the edges?

“could it be just the soil and debris that lightly settled into that shape, what if the rim of the lake isn’t the edge of the sinkhole. Imagine the above pic filled to the brim with water/oil/toxics, the ledge surrounded by 100′ cypress trees with mud and debris extending below and much further behind the surface perimeter…..”

Like this example:  overhang

The ABC News story (video below) has their artist version showing more straight sides on Lake FUBAR than the “official” diagram.
