Hawaii volcano, fracking at that geothermal plant and did it cause the volcano to erupt?

This is not related to Louisiana but it touches topics we talk about here.

The Hawaii volcano eruption news is covered on the FC blog. Keith M. sent some good information about the lava-hit geothermal plant in the vicinity of the volcano, Puna.

ExoPolitics –

Hawaii Volcanic Eruption Intentionally Triggered to Generate Massive Tsunami?

By Dr. Michael Salla May 15, 2018

” . . . From its inception, there has been controversy over the wisdom of the Puna Geothermal Venture being built within an active volcanic region with regularly occurring lava flows. However, what most aroused local opposition is direct scientific evidence that the powerplant has been using fracking techniques as a means of generating heat for power generation.

Scientists have established a clear linkage between fracking and earthquake activity in multiple studies . . . “

” . . . While the owners of the Puna Geothermal Venture insist that fracking has not been used, independent studies confirm otherwise. “

” . . . It is quite plausible that the Rothschild’s 1977 support and financial backing made Bronicki and Ormat Industries obligated to do the Rothschild’s bidding in some way. This makes it possible that Bronicki was instructed by the Rothschilds to build the geothermal facility in a dangerous volcanic region for a hidden purpose despite the inherent risk in building a facility in such a dangerous area. . . . “

And this is a comment on the article –

“I don’t know anything abt how geothermal works but I think the article did address this?

“While the owners of the Puna Geothermal Venture insist that fracking has not been used, independent studies confirm otherwise. A Duke University study of the eight wells used by the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) concluded:

The region of high fracture density is also consistent with the areas of the highest fluid production at PGV…. The production records are proprietary to the PGV parent company, Ormat, so tables and diagrams are not included in the dissertation. However, it is indicted that wells that penetrate the area where we calculate the greatest fracture density have higher fluid flow than elsewhere in the PGV lease. [pp. 55-56]

Essentially, the Duke University study suggested that fracking was occurring at the Puna Geothermal Venture via the injection of pressurized fluids into the wells and surrounding rocks.””

    • Sulfur also burns with a blue flame. Is it possible we are seeing sulfur rich material under heat and pressure igniting when it comes into contact with air (and ignition source aka lava)? Methane will burn producing water and carbon dioxide while Sulfur will burn producing sulfur dioxde a significantly worse greenhouse gas in comparison to carbon dioxide as well as being a greater risk to animal (humans included) health.

      • I think they have all sorts of monitors to detect which kind of gas it is. Top volcanologists all there, I bet.
But maybe they (USGS) just said methane based on the color without testing it. I have no idea.

      • Methane is less dense than air, so I can’t see how it is going to seep into the ground from burning ground level vegetation (which would have plenty of oxygen available making methane production less likely) especially since there is heat dynamics in play as well. If the burning vegetation (roots?) is underground (a relatively oxygen poor environment) then, I suppose, it might find its way to the surface and burn. They did say “The methane can also cause explosions if it ignites after building up underground…”.

      • maybe big cracks full of fallen trees etc. before lava emerged? I wonder if methane is seeping up from below from a fissue.
The geology should be well known to USGS since so many study the volcanoes of Hawaii.

  1. I do not know if the magma source for Yellowstone and Hawaii have any significant intersection/source (beyond the obvious), but if it does, perhaps some bright spark (pun intended) convinced those with the power to precipitate the eruption to do so as a means to release the pressure building under Yellowstone with realtively minor and localized collateral damage. I guess if we see Yellowstone uplift start to subside in the near term there may be some merit in the idea.
